DESCRIPTION -A picture I took with my cellphone on an Encinitas cliff one afternoon. The horizon was incredibly foggy and gave the sunset a haze.

I was snapping pictures from different views when I noticed a plane about to cross the sky. Using a cellphone, I knew I had to wait for the right moment because it would take several seconds before it was ready for another shot. So, I waited patiently for the plane to trail across the horizon, snapped the pic, and this is what came out. :)

you’ve been playing tricks on me
trying to convince me

that the body that stands before you is mine

that i’m supposed to have so much testosterone in these veins

that my hips are meant to be square instead of round
that i’m meant to have pecs instead of breasts
fooling me into believing

that i am not the woman i feel inside

mirror mirror

tell me how this fairytale went wrong

how i could play with barbies
only to grow up to be ken
stealing my big sisters clothes

scarred by a childhood of Disney movies

watching mermaids granted human legs
mice magicked into men

only to learn that little boys

don’t wake up as little girls
no matter how much they pray
or wish upon twinkling stars

where did my magic go? my big tall wish? my pixie dust?

i don’t want to fly
i just want to be who I feel inside
but my glass slippers have turned to cement
this 6’2” frame like a prison; a tower of flesh
that my hair will never grow long enough to escape

mirror, mirror you’ve been spreading lies about me
telling the world that how i feel is a joke
this place is too small for people who don’t fit the mold
and even smaller when you and your mate can’t procreate
i’m not gay

i’m just a girl waiting to be rescued

I want us to be miserable.

I mean real fucking miserable.

I want people to wonder why we even get up in the morning. To wonder how we even eek out an existence together. I want us to do the most back breaking things to keep a roof over our heads. I hope we have to shake fire and brimstone from our shoulder blades each night.

Our fingertips, I want the stench of cigarettes to be seared into them and alcohol sewn into our breath. I hope we sleep in a bed of ashtrays, unpaid bills, and notebook paper, cover ourselves in half painted canvases, lay our heads on piles of the things we never say, and dream in colors our minds are too terrified to comprehend. I hope we over sleep every night.

I want our nerves to be raw at every moment. I hope our every days are exhausting. I hope our days are shitty. I hope our days are scary. I hope our days become as monstrous as they'll say we are.

I hope they can't stand to be around us.

I want people to hate how we dress. I want them to whisper about us behind our back. I want them to whisper terrible things about us. I want them to think we're fat and ugly and stupid and then smile in our faces. I want people to think we're pretentious. I hope we have to cut a little space for us out of granite because that's all they'll fucking allow.

I hope hate isn't a deserving enough word to describe how they feel.

I want us to have friends that don't appreciate who we are to them. I hope they put their needs and desires above are own. I hope they're miserable too and want the company. I want them to guilt trip us until we're anaphylactic. I hope they try to drag us even deeper.

I want us to be miserable. I mean real fucking miserable. And I want each other to be the only happiness we can count on some days. I want the brilliant fucking happiness we are to make all the misery a god damn walk in the park.

I'm such an Aries.

At the first sign of trouble, I practically rear up on my hind legs, lower my horns, and then charge into it full speed and try to fix everything. And I realize its because I care so damn much. The other day, the foot plate on my friend's wheelchair fell off. Before I knew it, I was in fix it mode, horns down and rushing to Macguyver a solution.

I hate knowing someone is hurting and that there's maybe something I can do to change it. I want to save the world if just a little. I feel like I won't feel comfortable potentially bringing a child into this world if didn't try to make it better if just by the tiniest margin. But I have to remember that some things aren't meant to be fixed. And I have to accept that I can't fix everything. I can't fix everything. I shouldn't try to.

Sometimes situations just need to be. Sometimes problems and emotions just need to run their course. And its enough to just be there, say I love you, and maybe hold a hand. Sometimes okay is the best answer in the world.

And sometimes there aren't words. For a poet, that's a hard thing to push down past the larynx.

Sometimes I need to quell my heart when it wants to take everyone's pain away and remind it that sometimes you need to just let it be.

My friend's outside to pick me up. Busy Saturday.

Honestly,

I'm kind of speechless. Not that I don't have anything to say. It's just that I've been too busy smiling or laughing. Seriously, I've probably laughed more in the last week because of her than I have in months.

She's "my good feeling". She is all things I never knew I wanted in another. And the things I knew I wanted as well :). She's like a dream for this James Dean wannabe...

I once had a dream long ago. In this dream, I'm in a crowded ballroom. I'm surrounded by group of people who enthralled with my every word and gesture. I'm entertaining them with banter, and all of a sudden, I catch something from the corner of my eye. I turn my head slowly to my left and she's there. On the opposite side of this gigantic ballroom, she's there looking right back. She's surrounded just as I by people transfixed by her beauty and vying for her attention. But we stare into each other eyes and there is nothing between us. The world pauses and fades to gray and we are vibrant color. Everything hangs in the air between us like debris before a flashlight. Then simultaneously and leisurely, we raise our hands toward each other and grasp at the air. Confused, we glance at our hands then back at each other. Across that spacious room, we don't understand why our fingers aren't intertwined when we feel only breaths apart.

I knew I would meet this woman, but I never expected she would see me first. But she did. Looking back, I could feel it though. All the while I was running around working on art shows and poetry, my heart was keeping a secret waiting to be whispered.

I could go on for days on the reasons I call her lovely. Her smile, her humor, her eyes, her style, her body, her words, her skin, her laugh, her robot dance with soul.

And I'm terrified. But then again, she makes Everest seem doable. She makes bullets seem dodge-able. She makes the past seem acceptable. She makes true love seem real.

And she makes me want to be the greatest artist ever...

So be it.

This is a piece where two star crossed objects came together to create art. I had a 12x12 canvas that I'd yet to sell and wanted to put glass on. I didn't have any glass that would fit or the capability to cut glass so I was stuck. Then a friend gave me a small mirror and without even measuring it I knew it would fit. I took it home and low and behold they were a perfect match. :)

beauty products out live beauty queens
it seems
in their quest for fountains
they've created mountains
of single-serving youth
instant five-hour gratification
that which to them was momentary
will survive centuries here
here is their eternity finally achieved

if only to be remember forever
through the things that lasted them seconds

leaving this junkyard priest
privy to a million memories and confessions
now forgotten and lingering
like the light of dormant stars

New Series - Heart of Glass

This was my first attempt at my new series working with glass and aquaerosol. I'm calling the series Heart of Glass though I don't think they always be hearts.

This attempt turned out to be a bust: It wouldn't fit in a frame. It's uneven. I don't like the color scheme. Some of the cracks of the glass are unintelligible. Nevertheless, I ended up learning a lot for the next two successful pieces. :)

Dreams

I don't like the idea of "chasing dreams". If they are truly your dreams, then there is no need to chase. You don't chase what you have. Chasing dreams is like a dog chasing its tail. The task is to stand perfectly still. To have the strength to hold on and trust that it will come and bath you like the rising sun. To borrow a quote, "Assuming that this planet rotates, I'll just procrastinate until the day I bump into my soulmate..." Though I'm not talking about soul-mates here. Far from it.

I think about it and I want to describe dreams in metaphor. I want to say dreams are like being stuck in a glass tank surrounded by ocean and filling up with water. The water is rising up your body and your heart is telling you to just relax and go with it. But as the water gets higher and higher, you panic and look for a way out, using all of your strength to push at the door. It doesn't budge. Your heart keeps telling you to be calm, keep breathing, and accept it. But the water reaches your face so you struggle and hold your breath till your lungs burn. You pass out when if you had just opened your mouth, you would have discovered that you had gills in your lungs. The pressure equalizes in the tank allowing you push the door open and swim out in the sea.

But that's not a good enough metaphor.

So, maybe dreams are like zippers you discover on your body that you've never seen before or forgot about. And you're terrified to unzip them and see what's underneath. And you pull the zipper and inside there is color and textures that you've never known. So, you run to show your friends and family your colors. But no one else can see it but you.
So you have to describe it to them and hope they'll understand. Maybe they don't get it and say things that seem to hurt more than when they've said it before. So, you get discouraged and return those zippers to where you found them. Some people stay bundled up for months at at a time, some for years. Some people never pull at those zippers again.
Because unzipping that skin is taking off armor. And that exposure turns even the air into acid. All those colors and textures beneath those zippers is like pure love and love feels amazing but when opened to the world, it can allow you to be hurt more than before. That's the trade off.
So you have to maintain the bravery it takes to keep unzipping because when you pull at those zippers, people can feel it. When you peel it away, people can hear it in your voice, see it your eyes, sense it in your touch. It maybe even leaves a scent because when you peel away that layer, it leads other open individuals to you and vice versa.
And every time you open your skin, the textures have changed and the colors are new. It also hurts a little more each time. And sometimes you get caught exposed and get hurt, either by "accident" or by someone's intention. But you keep peeling away because you know there's no going back. You've seen too much of yourself to ever return to living every moment cooped up in your own skin.

Hm, that's an ok metaphor. Something better will probably come to me someday... :)

I turn on my car to find two lights on the dash. On the right, the check engine light and on the left, the empty gas tank light. As I roll over the bumps in my apartment complex, the gas light dims and disappears for a few seconds. It lets me know that there's still a bit sloshing around in there.

I open my g-mail to find an e-mail from my ex. The air around me began to fizzle and my heart paused as I read. It lets me know that there's still a bit sloshing around in there.

Today I followed a beautiful butterfly around for several minutes. It was quite large and the markings were amazing. It was mostly yellow with bits of blue and red at bottom of the wings. I tried my best to get very close without scaring it away as it fluttered around. It inspired a new painting before it finally flew over the fence and into the sky. Thank you butterfly.

I sold a piece that night. "Beneath" officially found a home :).

I fear my that digestive tract has gone in reverse and that my stomach has been unknowingly gnawing at my soul, swallowing it out my mouth and into the world where it is broken down by acid rains and flushed into the depths of the ocean to be nibbled on by tiny blue fish and yellow crabs.
